Over the last 10 or so years, I’ve managed to amass a very large custom browser spell-check dictionary as a result of hitting “add to dictionary” every time I came across a new industry word that my browser did not recognize. I’m one of those very organized individuals that backs up their bookmarks, documents, and even dictionaries every few months on local storage and the cloud. Yes, I’m weird and also not a great speller.

Thus far, I’ve managed to collect 441 SEO/SEM/SMM related words that are not in the standard dictionary. It is really nice to have a hue

Keep in mind:

  • I have been known to make spelling errors on my own, use at your own risk
  • There are a ton of words in here unrelated to SEO e.g. frameworks, programming languages
  • Some of these words are made up industry words
  • By no means is this a comprehensive list

You can freely view or download the custom SEO dictionary as I’ve uploaded it to this server for your viewing pleasure. To add this dictionary to your current dictionary check out the next section.

Steps to add to your custom browser dictionary

First things first, find the location of your browser dictionary. (all of this at your own risk, we accept no responsibility of screwing up your browser).

In Firefox / Windows
C:\users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\long-ass-number.default\persdict.dat

In Firefox / Mac
~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/[unique-alphanumeric-string].default/persdict.dat

In Firefox / Linux
~/.mozilla/firefox/[unique-alphanumeric-string].default/persdict.dat

In Chrome / Windows
C:\Users\coombe\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

In Chrome / Mac
~Library/Spelling/

Once you’ve got your hands on your dictionary, open it up using Notepad++ or the editor of your choice.  Also I use Firefox Windows / Linux so my Mac and Chrome locations might not be perfect.

Pop it open and paste the dictionary into the file starting at the last line. Make sure each word is on a new line otherwise it probably won’t work. If you think my dictionary is superior to yours then just delete the entire file and put mine in place.
